Maria Marten in the Red Barn |
|
: Complete in 4 sheets. 1 character sheet, 2 portraits and 1 topographical sheet. All prints approx. 9"x7" to plate marks.
The murder of Maria Marten in May 1827 became one of the most famous of the nineteenth century. It had all the ingredients the public revelled in: a seduced village maiden, a heartless villain, and the fact that the crime was only discovered 11 months later by a dream.
"Principal Characters in Maria Marten in the Red Barn."
Characters: "William Corder" "Maria-Dead" "Ghost Maria" "Thomas Balham" "William" "Ann Marten" "Maria" "Thomas Marten"
Portraits:
"Mr Saville as William Corder in The Red Barn. May 1st, 1829 [sic]. Hope's Portraits."
Full length portrait of Saville holding rope, and dagger dripping blood. Aiming pistol. "Maria Dead" in barn in background, with constables arriving on scene. This is one of Mr Hope's earliest prints. He engraved it when only 19.
"Maria Marten. Murdered by William Corder in the Red Barn, Polstead, Suffolk. 1827."
Full length portrait of Marten in front of the Red Barn. Polstead, Suffolk. (I have the original working pencil sketch, dated 198?, for this print. A photocopy of the original will be included with this print. This shows Hope's original intention to make this a portrait of an actress, Miss Kirby, but his research persuaded him to produce it as Marten herself. The sketch shows Kirby's name and is numbered 82, in 'Hope's Characters' series.)
Topographical View:
"The Red Barn, Polstead" Suffolk. Burnt to the ground in the 1880's? Close up view of the barn. Cart & chickens in foreground. (This plate was originally intended as a scene for this production, but ended as a factual representation, taken from contemporary images, although still in the Juvenile Drama style.
