Mary Ellen KING was born on 1
September 1896 at 19 Gustard Wood Common, Wheathampstead. She was daughter
of Alfred KING and Lucy MUNT.
She was christened on 25 October 1896 in St. Helen's Parish Church.
She was a pupil-teacher at Gustard Wood National School (branch)
about 1908. She caddied at Gustard Wood Gulf Course. She was a domestic
servant at Ashwell House, Verulam Road, St. Albans in 1910. She was
confirmed on 13 April 1911 and received First Holy Communion on 16 April
1911 in St. Helen's Parish Church. She
was a domestic servant at Codicote Lodge, Welwyn Hitchin Road, Codicote in
1915, at Rothamsted Manor in 1918, and at Schwick Place, Elstree in 1919.
She met Will HOLDFORD who was at F.M.S. Hospital, Blackmore
End, Gustard Wood, and they were married at St. Helen’s Church on 3 July
1920. They immigrated to the United States on 11 September 1920 and
settled in Youngstown, Ohio. She became a U.S. citizen on 26 May 1927.
She returned to England to visit relatives in 1929, 1937, 1962, and
1965. During WWII she sent clothing and care packages to her relatives in
England. She died on 21
August 1970.

Alfred KING was born on 1 July 1862 in Wheathampstead and
was baptized on 27 July 1862 at St. Helen's Parish Church.
He was 8 years old at Hog Island, Gustard Wood in 1871 census.
He was an agricultural labourer until 1896 and the one outstanding
common characteristic of agricultural labourers was that they were all
poor. He was a builder's
laborer between 1896 and 1935. His
son was killed in battle in 1915. Alfred attended the Wheathampstead War
Memorial dedication at St. Helen's Parish Church in 1920.
He was a carpenter refurbishing the cellars of J.W. Green's Brewery
in Luton circa 1937.
He died at 77 years old on 10 March 1940 at Oster House, St.
Albans. He married Lucy MUNT on 9 January 1887 at St. Helen's
Parish Church in the presence of Thomas Latchford & Ellen Latchford.

Lucy MUNT was born on 28 November 1868 in Cherry Trees,
Lower Luton Road. She was baptized on 27 December 1868 at St. Helen's
Parish Church. Her
whereabouts are not known in the 1871 and 1881 census. She was 19 years
old in Gustard Wood when she married.
She was 58 years old on 8 October 1927 when she died in Gustard
Wood. Alfred KING and Lucy

He was a private in 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, and it
was assigned to 21st Brigade in 7th Division at Lyndhurst, Hampshire.
On 7 October 1914, the battalion landed in France and Flanders at
Zeebrugge, Belgium. He might
have joined B Company, which was based at St Albans and had a shooting
range close to Hammonds Farm, Sandridge. Their first experience of
large-scale casualties was at the Battle of Festubert in May 1915, and it
may be that this is where he was killed. He was buried in Godezonne Farm
Cemetery, Kemmel, Ieper, West Valaanderen, Belgium Grave Reference/Panel
Number: I. D. 3.

Frederick KING was baptized on 28
October 1888 in St. Helen's Parish Church.
He was a chauffeur for owner of Heath & Heather Ltd, herb
specialist of St. Albans in 1937. He lived at 28 Station Approach,
Ridgemont Road, St. Albans in 1940. About
1962 he lived in 49 St. Leonards Crescent, Sandridge and in 3 Cotlandswick,
London Colney. He died after
1969.

Albert Edward KING was baptized on 30 November 1902 in St.
Helen's Parish Church. He
lived at Old Reasons Farm, Wheathampstead in 1925, at Bracey's Cottage,
Gustard Wood in 1927, at Pretoria Cottages, near the Tin Pot in Gustard
Wood in 1932, in Brewhouse Hill, Wheathampstead in 1940, at Flat 59, Hall
Gardens in Colney Heath after 1962. He
died after 1969.

Ernest Charles KING was baptized on 25 March 1905 in St.
Helen's Parish Church. Circa
1914 he broke his leg and developed a deformed leg and was lame all his
life. He left school at 13 years; he went to work at Fred Wrights
Cucumber glasshouses. In
cucumber season he worked to late at night packing cucumbers in boxes
ready for market. He then
went home to sleep to the early hours.
Then up & accompany the lorry to Convent Garden Market in
London. During the summer
when the water levels were low in the wells he had to go down a ladder in
the side of the well & clean the walls.
He resided in Kimpton between 1940 and 1956.
He died on 25 March 1956.

Sidney George KING was baptized on 29 March 1908 in St. Helen's
Parish Church. He died of
scarlet fever complicated by diphtheria in Gustard Wood in 1922.
ix.
Bertram KING was baptized on 27 November 1910 in St. Helen's
Parish Church. He lived in
Gustard Wood in 1932, in 21 Harvey Road, London Collney, St. Albans, and
in Flat 5G, Hall Gardens, Colney Heath, St. Albans in 1962.
He lived at 153 St. Alban's Road, Sandridge, in 1984.
He died about 1987.

He died on 25 December 1882 in Hog Island.
He married Mary FRENCH on 13 October 1845 in St. Helen's
Parish Church in presence of Wm French & Phobe Stevens.

George Carter, alias 'Smashum', was convicted of assaulting and
beating Mary, his wife in 1860, but the Bench, not wishing to bring
suffering to his family, fined him 1/13 costs.
He couldn’t pay and was imprisoned at Hertford Goal for the
eleventh time. He died of disease of liver, dropsy on 28 March 1869 in
Gustard Wood. He married Mary
COBB on 2 February 1839 in St. Helen's Parish Church.
He signed his name on the entry of marriage. Mary Cobb signed with her mark (X).
